I think it's because authors and fanfic writers alike don't like to limit their options by installing rules for magic, but in my eyes, things have a lot more spice if there are defined boundaries instead of suggested omnipotency.

Actually, this sprouted as a spur of the moment, when I had to prepare the slides for one of my own presentations, before I knew it, I already had half of Seishiro's slides designed (hence the pdf). ;)
